Delta Waterway Cleanup Along the Sacramento River
- Large Sacramento River Cleanup took place Saturday, April 13, 2013.
RVWA-SIKO participated in a large Sacramento River clean-up effort this year called the Delta Waterway Cleanup which was part of Creek Week and was sponsored by the Delta Conservancy. Jason Voss, local windsurfing instructor, Steve Smith, past RVWA-SIKO President, and Derek of Delta Windsurf and Watersports kicked off the event by helping Fox 40 News in their story about the delta and our participation in the Creek Week event. Lead by our RVWA-SIKO President, Mike Conner, and Delta Conservancy official, Shakoora, RVWA-SIKO members joined various other groups and staged at The Sign where they were assigned river sections. Working several hours and compiling piles of trash, the groups cleaned everything from Delta Windsurf and Watersports to the County Park. In the end we picked up over 3,800 pounds of garbage and 22 tires on Sherman Island! A very special thanks to Justin at Advanced Disposal for giving us a big break on disposal costs and for hauling it all away. With his early delivery and assistance, our clean up project went off without a hitch.
As part of the post clean-up celebration, the Delta Conservancy treated the volunteers to a wonderful chili lunch and free T-Shirt at Sherman Island County Park. RVWA-SIKO Members have been cleaning the delta levees for years and sincerely appreciated the extra efforts of the Delta Conservancy to include our area in their Creek Week cleanup efforts. We would also like to specially thank Bob and Mina at the County Park for their tireless and constant daily efforts to keep the parklands clean and as wonderful as they are.
Galen Kusic, Editor of River News-Herald & Isleton Journal, was on location and wrote a really nice article about RVWA-SIKO and the clean up efforts. While you are on BG Phillips Photography page, check out his other great nature shots of our Delta area. He captured a river otter with a fish along with some beautiful seagull shots in his Creek Week Part II album. Show your support of his efforts. Like his page! You can also visit
Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta Conservancy to show your support for their efforts. Not only did they help in Creek Week by co-organizing and co-sponsoring the dumpster and gathering multiple organizations together, but the Conservancy is charged with supporting efforts that advance environmental protection and economic sustainability in the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta. Thanks, Shakoora, from Delta Conservancy, Sac Creeks, and our President, Mike, for setting up and orchestrating the Delta Creek Week and RVWA-SIKO Cleanup, a special thanks to CA Dept of Water Resources and Reclamation District 341 for your constant support, and thank you to all who helped clean the river shores during Creek Week and beyond. Great teamwork!!!
Besides keeping our launch sites open and supplying sandbags for easier access to the water, RVWA-SIKO goes above and beyond to work outside the special interests of our club. We have grown into somewhat of a stewardship role of being caretakers of the environment and river. By joining forces with Delta Conservancy and their Creek Week efforts, RVWA-SIKO has expanded its yearly river clean up to become a part of a larger force that helps make the river a cleaner, safer, and more enjoyable place for all.
